The most common kind of bread used to make tartines is a rustic bread called пїЅpain PoilaneпїЅ. However, any kind of bread you like could be used as a substitute.

When choosing a bread substitute make sure you get a thick slice of bread (at least 1cm thick) that is dense or closely knit. If you choose bread that is too thin and airy the ingredients you put over the bread will soak and fall through.

After choosing the bread you can opt to place the spread immediately on top of the bread or toast the bread first depending on the texture you want the bread to be.

The advantage of toasting the bread is that it makes for a crisper crust that doesnпїЅt allow the toppings to soak immediately.

Before adding the other ingredients line the slice of bread with any spread you like. You can use cream cheese, pesto, butter, hummus, or even plain mayo. After that decorate the bread with slices of ham, cheese, eggs, sun-dried tomatoes, salmon, or whatever else you might like.

If you wish to melt the toppings before serving you can bake the tartines for about 5-10 minutes in a pre-heated oven. Add salt and pepper to taste. Otherwise, you can serve them as is.

Although the concept is very simple пїЅ an open-faced sandwich пїЅ the taste and presentation can be varied an unlimited number of ways.

Tartines originated from Europe so that the classic ingredients used reflect this. However, depending on a personпїЅs tastes you can use virtually any ingredients you like.

Tartines can be distinctly English, Mediterranean, Italian, French, Swedish, and even Asian.

So long as you use ingredients native to a certain region you can make a specialty sandwich to reflect the regionпїЅs cuisine.
